HDP Letter in Support of Moldova

WASHINGTON — Today, House Democracy Partnership Chairman Vern Buchanan (R-FL) and Ranking Member Dina Titus (D-NV) urged the State Department to maintain its support for a U.S.-led initiative to construct a 400 kV overhead electrical transmission line between Straseni, Moldova, and Gutinas, Romania.
In a bipartisan letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reflecting on a recent HDP delegation visit to Moldova, Chairman Buchanan and Ranking Member Titus emphasized the importance of completing the transmission line project to strengthen Moldova’s energy security and foster a more favorable commercial environment for U.S. engagement in Eastern Europe.
While the State Department continues its comprehensive review of global infrastructure initiatives, the letter highlights that U.S. backing for this project would significantly diminish Moldova’s dependence on Russian energy, which remains precarious due to transit routes passing through Ukraine. Advancing Moldova’s energy independence aligns with the long-term economic and strategic interests of the United States and its allies across the region.
